Platform Engineering: Why DevOps Teams Keep Talking About It

July 23, 2026

Platform engineering is the response to a specific failure mode: DevOps made every team responsible for their own infrastructure, and every team ended up solving the same problems slightly differently, badly, and without enough people who actually enjoy that work.

What a platform team actually does

Instead of every product team building and maintaining their own CI/CD pipeline, environment provisioning, and monitoring setup, a platform team builds a shared, self-service internal platform that handles it once, well, for everyone. Product teams get a golden path: a standard way to deploy, monitor, and scale that just works, without needing deep infrastructure expertise on every team.

Why this is not just “DevOps with a new name”

The distinction that matters is ownership and audience. DevOps is a set of practices any team can follow. Platform engineering treats the internal platform itself as a product, with the rest of engineering as its users, which means it gets designed, documented, and improved based on actual developer experience, not just built once and left alone.

Where teams should start

The teams that get the most value are not starting with the most sophisticated internal developer platform, they are starting by identifying the one workflow every team complains about, usually deployment or local environment setup, and building a genuinely good shared solution for that first.
