Phones now ship with dedicated chips built for running AI models locally, and it is changing what “AI feature” means in a mobile app. Instead of every request round-tripping to a cloud model, a growing share of AI features run directly on the device.
Why this matters beyond speed
On-device inference is faster because there is no network round trip, but the bigger shift is around privacy and cost. Data that never leaves the device is a much easier privacy story to tell users and regulators, and it removes the per-request cost of calling a hosted model for high-frequency features like live text suggestions or image filters.
Where it falls short
On-device models are smaller and less capable than the large hosted models, so anything that needs deep reasoning, broad knowledge, or complex generation still needs a cloud call. Most real apps end up with a hybrid setup: fast, private, on-device models for lightweight, frequent tasks, and cloud models for anything that needs real depth.
The practical impact
Designing this hybrid split well, deciding what runs on-device versus in the cloud, is quickly becoming a core mobile architecture decision, not an afterthought bolted on after the app already works.
